Our nice friends from Wellington City who are hosting the 3rd annual Wellington Zinefest have ever so kindly let us have a half table stall to sell our wares and promote the good word of Auckland Zinefest, Cross Street Studios and the Cross Street Zine Library. Yay!

We're super keen to play in the little city and catch up with our new friends from Welly we met at Auckland Zinefest! You should definitely come along, say hi, hang out. Potentially we might be a part of a talk on artist run spaces too, exciting.

We will be selling zines from members of the Cross Street collective and friends, **Official**Auckland Zinefest merch (hah), as well as many more surprises.

Wellington Zinefest!

Our good friends down in welly town are holding Zinefest this year. You should check it out, it's gonna be AMAZING and in a bar even. Woah. Anyways you might see us there (at least some of the Cross Street Crew will be headed that way, even for a looksee), hopefully giving a talk or workshop. Details TBC.

Feedback on AK Zinefest 2009

A few excerpts from feedback submitted to us by stallholders this year.

"It was very inspirational to meet other equally motivated people with similar interests and talk shop about zines – from production issues to readership to the content being published – and all this knowledge will become very useful later.Overall, I would say that Auckland Zinefest 2009 was: Fantastic! A great people meeting opportunity!"

"The workshop and talks area was so well set up, I thought it all worked really well in that space and was a non-threatening environment for people to get involved."

"Bryce Galloway will talk about his experiences making the long running and regular-as-laxitive zine Incredibly Hot Sex with Hideous People, now in its 34th issue. The zine is a Wellington based quarterly, free from Cuba Street at time of issue. Galloway - 43, NZ male and balding - takes to the perzine genre, usually the territory of North American teenage girls."

Documentary about zines in the Mid-North West of America by Microcosm Publishing.

"A cultural analysis of what causes zine makers to tick; what the hell zines are, why people make zines, the origin of zines, the resources and community available for zine makers, and the future of zines. Interviews with about 70 zine makers, ex-zine makers, and readers from the northwest. Featuring footage of the Portland Zine Symposium, a zine bicycle tour of Portland, and activities bringing zine culture to life."

Zines as Freedom of Expression

"I’ve heard that there was once a time when the only way you could find out about anything exciting was by reading a Xeroxed piece of paper someone had stolen from a squat. I may not have been alive back then but, in that pre-blog age, zines formed a central and essential part of many artisitic cultures outside the mainstream. From Hip- Hop’s ‘factsheets’ to the photocopied diaries of romantic Goths, zines were the communicative medium without which those communities could not have survived.

But why bother with them now? In an age where a paralysing quantity of information about new music and art, the traditional staples of zinedom, is available on the internet, what role can zines still play? I believe the unique qualities which define zines; their non-profit status, their limited communities of interest, passionate creators and freedom from advertiser pressure make them an ideal vehicle for cultural communication. My talk will share my thoughts about those points and hopefully explain why I think zines are freedom of expression at its most simple and honest."
